How to pronounce Polish letter «ę» [ɛ̃ ~ em/en/eń; конец = e]

ę

IPA[ɛ̃ ~ em/en/eń; конец = e]

Inside a word, ę is read by its neighbour; word-finally it is almost always plain [e] without nasality.

Reading rules

  • before p, b — [em] — zęby, tępy
  • before t, d, c, dz, cz, dż — [en] — będę, tęcza
  • before ć, dź — [eń] — będzie
  • before k, g — [eŋ] — ręka, dziękuję
  • before fricatives — nasal [ę] — gęś
  • before l, ł — plain [e] — wzięła
  • word-finally — always [e] — idę, się, lubię

How to shape the sound

Same neighbour rule: before p and b — [em] (zęby → zemby, tępy → tempy); before t, d, c, dz, cz, dż — [en] (będę → bende, tęcza → tencza, dętka → dentka); before ć and dź — [eń] (będzie → beńdzie, napięcie → napieńcie); before k and g — [eŋ] (ręka → reŋka, dziękuję → dzieŋkuje, piękny → pieŋkny); before fricatives — nasal [ę] (gęś); before l and ł — plain [e] (wzięła). Word-finally ę fully loses nasality: always [e] (idę → ide, robię → robie, się → sie, lubię cię → lubie cie).

Common trap

Word-finally, learners keep a strong nasal or add “-em”. The rule for learners: final ę = plain [e] — «piszę» sounds [pisze], «się» — [sie].

How to fix it

Word-finally say ordinary [e]; inside the word — by the neighbour rule. Words: zęby, będę, będzie, ręka, dziękuję, idę, się.
